Amphenol is a NYSE company trading under the symbol, AMPH. The company is a leading supplier of electronic interconnect products to the telecommunications and computer industries. The company is a majority owned property of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. In 1982, Amphenol had lost considerable market share to competition primarily because prior ownership underinvested in the company. Amphenol had, for twenty years, been the market leader, but had slipped to fourth place. In early 1983, Phil Arneson was appointed President and Chief Executive, and took on a "fix and grow" mission. During his four-year tenure with Amphenol, he installed an aggressive revitalization program which, despite industry recession, yielded these dramatic results:
Arneson tripled R&D spending, consolidated 15 U.S. facilities down to 8, acquired Socapex in France and Teldix in Germany, and formed a new joint venture company, Nippon Interconnect, in Japan. Amphenol's annual sales now exceed $3 billion.
